World could learn from Nepal’s post-earthquake reconstruction,

President of Chaudhary Group tells world business leaders

Kathmandu, October 15  President of Chaudhary Group Mr. Binod Chaudhary has said that the post-earthquake reconstruction efforts of Nepal could be a lesson for the world.

Speaking at the Global CEO Conference organized by the Forbes magazine in Manila on Wednesday, Mr. Chaudhary said he was proud to see the contributions of the Nepalese private sector on immediate relief and long-term reconstruction works after Nepal’s devastating earthquake on April 25 this year. He said it has set a precedent about the role of the private sector on disaster management and post-disaster reconstruction.

Mr. Chaudhary pointed out the success of the Nepalese private sector in achieving maximum results on post-earthquake reconstruction under resource and time constraints. He asked the world leaders to consider taking the help of the private sector on relief and reconstruction works after similar natural disasters.

President of the Philippines, Benigno Aquino III, who shared the forum with Mr. Chaudhary, said appropriate economic policies and good governance were the preconditions for nation building and development of infrastructure.

There was discussion on the post-earthquake reconstruction works being carried out in Nepal by Chaudhary Foundation, the philanthropic arm of Chaudhary Group. The Foundation has committed to build 10,000 transitional homes and 100 schools following the April 25 earthquake. Out of these, 1000 homes have already been completed and 21 schools will be completed soon. The Foundation is making rapid progress on site identification, formation of local construction committees, and construction work for rest of the homes and schools.

The Forbes magazine organizes the Global CEO Conference every year to provide a forum for the world business leaders to share ideas on humanitarian initiatives, social work, and various other issues. Forbes Asia had recently featured President Mr. Chaudhary on its cover in recognition of his contributions to post-earthquake relief and reconstruction works in Nepal.
